Job search diagnosis | Before the interview

Why you are not getting interviews—and what to check before rewriting your résumé

Applications without recruiter conversations place the break before the interview stage. That does not prove the résumé caused it: role fit, eligibility, application timing, channel, and résumé evidence all sit in the same part of the funnel. Audit the recent applications before changing everything.

The stage is visible

The employer is deciding before a live conversation, so interview practice is not the first test.

The cause is still open

A weak match and a strong match with weak résumé evidence can both end in silence.

The next move is a comparison

Compare recent applications by fit and response before deciding what to rewrite.

No interviews narrows the stage, not the cause

The application-to-screen conversion tells you that evidence is disappearing before recruiter contact. It cannot show which filter removed the application.

  • The role may require experience, location, work authorization, or seniority that the application does not match.
  • The background may fit, but the top of the résumé may not prove the requirements a recruiter scans first.
  • A strong application can still arrive after the employer has a shortlist or after the role changes internally.

Recent applications reveal more than another generic résumé score

Separate the roles that closely match your background from the roles that require a stretch. Then compare recruiter responses inside those groups.

  • If strong-fit roles respond and stretch roles do not, targeting is the first variable to tighten.
  • If neither group responds, inspect eligibility, application channel, timing, and how the résumé presents proof.
  • If referrals respond but cold applications do not, the search channel may deserve the next experiment.

Change one pre-interview variable before sending the next batch

Choose one variable that the evidence supports. Keeping the other parts stable gives the next outcomes something to compare against.

  • Target a tighter role family.
  • Move the strongest matching evidence into the résumé's first scan area.
  • Test a different application channel or earlier timing without changing the target at the same time.

Questions behind the search

Is my résumé bad if I am not getting interviews?

Not necessarily. The résumé sits in the pre-interview stage, but role fit, eligibility, timing, application channel, and employer changes can create the same result.

Should I apply to more jobs if nobody responds?

More volume repeats the same process. First compare recent applications by fit and response, then change the variable with the strongest evidence behind it.

Can an ATS score explain why I was rejected?

An ATS comparison can find missing role language, but it cannot reproduce every employer's filters or prove why a specific application was rejected.
