Cue-Routine-Reward Designer

Design habit loops using behavioral science

Understanding the habit loop enables change. Most people focus on willpower, but behavioral science shows that designing the loop is more effective.

The Habit Loop (from "The Power of Habit")

Every habit follows a loop: a cue triggers a routine, which delivers a reward. The anticipation of the reward (the craving) is what makes habits stick.

Tip: Make it small enough that you can't say no

The craving is the anticipation of the reward that drives the habit

Keys to Habit Loop Success
  • Make the cue obvious: Put visual reminders in your environment
  • Make the routine easy: Reduce friction, start tiny
  • Make the reward satisfying: Celebrate immediately after
  • To break a habit: Keep the cue and reward, but substitute the routine
