Customer interview mistakes turn politeness into false demand
A friendly call can feel like evidence even when nothing was learned. The common failure is not friendliness itself; it is asking the customer to judge a future product before recovering what they did when the problem last occurred.
Good fit for
- Several interviews produced compliments but no change in customer behavior
- The founder speaks for most of the call or explains the idea before asking about the problem
- Notes contain words such as useful and interesting without dates, steps, costs, or consequences
- People agree to stay in touch but no specific next action is scheduled
Not the right fit for
- A usability session focused on task completion, errors, and interface comprehension
- A sales pipeline where the problem is deal execution after buyer qualification
- Quantitative survey design, sample sizing, or statistical analysis
What changes the answer
False confidence enters at the pitch, the question, or the close
Pitching early changes the subject
The customer starts reacting to your explanation instead of describing the event, workaround, and consequence in their own words.
Hypothetical intent has no tradeoff
A future yes costs nothing. Ask what the person bought, tried, postponed, requested, or changed when the problem was real.
A vague close protects both sides
“Keep me posted” avoids rejection but tests nothing. Ask for one specific next step whose cost matches the stage of the idea.

Customer interview mistakes founders ask about
What is the biggest mistake in customer interviews?
Pitching before understanding the last real event is the most damaging pattern because every later answer is shaped by the proposed solution. Recover the timeline first.
Are leading questions always bad in customer interviews?
They are bad when they contain the desired answer or assume the problem, urgency, or solution. A focused follow-up can still be neutral when it asks for a missing fact, such as who approved the purchase.
Why do customers say they would buy and then disappear?
The interview may have asked for a prediction without requiring a tradeoff. Timing, budget, authority, alternatives, and switching cost remain unknown until a specific commitment is requested.
Can I interview friends about a startup idea?
Yes, if they match the customer and can describe recent behavior. Their encouragement is not demand evidence, so record events and commitments separately from praise.
